The oldest international Smart Cities and Smart Destinations event is back in April

The tenth edition of Portugal’s oldest event for Smart Cities and Smart Destinations will take place on the 17th and 18th of April.

Smart Travel was launched in 2014, in Trás-os-Montes where it was based (in Bragança until 2019).

After the pandemic, Smart Travel reconfigured itself and began to explore new destinations, new stages, bringing the best content, the best international and national speakers to sow the seeds of creativity, intelligence and other topics necessary for sustainable development.

Therefore, in 2024, Smart Travel will take place in the central region of the country, namely in Mealhada and Luso where, for two days, different topics will be discussed and many of the best that that area has to offer will be experienced.

The Municipality of Mealhada thus becomes the driving force behind yet another forum for debate on territorial intelligence in all its aspects and topics, from the economy and investment attraction, to sustainability, mobility, urban planning, tourism, technology and, as it could not be otherwise, the environment, health and well-being.

The first day of the event will be a visit to some places of interest in the municipality of Mealhada, identifying potential for investment and also cultural, gastronomic and tourist interest.

At the end of the afternoon, there will be time for the official opening of the event with the presence of two speakers who will set the tone for us to reflect on the future of cities and territories. Philosophy professor José Alves Jana will speak about the need to “urgently return to Polis”. On the other hand, Jorge Saraiva will put into perspective the different currents of intelligence today.

The second day of Smart Travel will be the conference with international speakers and three panels. Guest speakers include Piero Pelizzaro (Director of the National Innovation Center for Public Buildings in Italy), Jaeyeon Choe (Professor and Researcher at Glasgow Caledonian University in the United Kingdom) and Joe Appleton (Journalist, communicator and Storyteller). Among the national speakers, highlights include Helena Freitas, Cristóvão Monteiro, Paula Teles, Hélder Bruno, among others.

In addition to international and national speakers, Smart Travel will have three panels. The first, dedicated to cities; the second, dedicated to technologies, tools and services oriented towards cities and destinations. Innovation, creativity, sustainability, the pillars of a smarter future; the third, dedicated to tourism, well-being, urbanism and strategies and development to shape cities and territories not only physically, but also influence emotionally and with a strong positive charge the citizens who inhabit them.

The ingredients have thus been gathered for another event of unique quality in Portugal that brings together cities, territories, researchers and academics as well as companies, startups linked to smart cities but also to tourism and smart destinations.

Becoming the host city of one of the most important international smart cities and smart tourism events in 2024 will be another boost to put Mealhada and the central region on the radar of good examples of urban intelligence policies, with sustainable development strategies for the future.

Smart Travel will take place at Cine-Teatro da Mealhada.
